PREVENTING MOLD IN YOUR HOME

No one wants to deal with mold inside of their home, but the fact of the matter is that over half of the houses in the United States have issues with mold. While some of it can be wiped away with proper cleaning supplies, other types of mold can cause serious problems. Not only can it cause issues to the structure of your home, but also creates health issues for you and your loved ones, especially if you suffer from allergies. Certain types of toxic mold can go undetected by the naked eye, so it’s important for you to take certain steps to help prevent mold or mildew build up. If you have noticed mold growing in your home, you want to get it taken care of as soon as possible. Contact American Structure Inc. for professional mold remediation services in North Little Rock.

CLEAR THE CLUTTER

The main thing that you want to pay attention to in your home as it relates to preventing mold is the air flow. You want to be sure that your HVAC system is able to do its job and circulate the air throughout your household. When you have a ton of clutter, not only is it an eyesore, but it also reduces the air flow. This gives moisture more of an opportunity to settle in which, in turn, allows for mold to grow. Keep the clutter in your home down to a minimum by throwing out items that are no longer useful to you. Also, utilize the fans within your home to help circulate the air.

USE A DEHUMIDIFIER

We all know that North Little Rock can get pretty humid during the spring and summer, and mold loves humidity. When you begin to notice condensation on walls, pipes, and/or your windows, this is a clear sign that it is too humid in your house. A great and easy way to help with this is to purchase a dehumidifier. If your home is incredibly humid, it would be wise to invest in a whole house dehumidifier, but if you only notice high humidity in a few select areas, then a portable dehumidifier should do the trick in helping you prevent mold.

PROPER VENTILATION

It’s not likely that you give much thought into the ventilation of your home, but in order to avoid having a mold problem, you want to be sure that your home has proper ventilation. This is especially important when you do certain activities such as cooking dinner, doing your laundry, or taking a shower. Make sure that your vents lead to the outside and not the attic. Also, check the ventilation throughout your house. Use your AC unit to help circulate the air and be sure to open a window or use an exhaust fan when cooking, showering, or getting your laundry done.

DRAINAGE AND WATERPROOFING

If you’ve noticed that your foundation is in need of repair and made the first mistake of ignoring the issue, don’t make matters even worse and decide to perform home renovations. Oftentimes, repair requires lifting the home which will damage certain interior structures as well as the plumbing. Not to mention the fact that if the foundation damage gets worse, the house may shift which will damage your recently finished renovations. Why do all of that work just to spend the money to do it all over again?

DRY WET AREAS IMMEDIATELY

Mold requires moisture in order to grow, so when you notice wet areas, you want to make sure that you get it dried as soon as possible. Keep an eye out for seepage after heavy rainfall, look for leaky pipes, and clean up a spill right after it happens. Also, you don’t want to leave wet clothes in the washer for too long when you are doing your laundry. Mold can grow very quickly in this situation, so just be sure to hang your clothes out to dry after washing them, or stick them in the dryer as soon as you can.

BATHROOM AND BASEMENT CARE

The two areas of your house that are prone to mold growth are your basement/crawlspace and your bathrooms. Mold loves the darkness and moisture that are found in basements, and obviously the bathroom can become wet after a shower or if you have a leaky pipe. Make sure to consistently check these areas and make sure that they remain dry.

It can be pretty easy to prevent mold growth, it just takes a little bit of effort on your part. If you have recently noticed mold growing in your home, you want to get it taken care of immediately. Contact the professionals at American Structure Inc. for our mold remediation services in North Little Rock and we’ll make sure that your home is mold-free.
